    ERAS photo requirements

These are the file rules the checker tests. AAMC gives the size numbers as maximums. It does not list a pixel size or a minimum.

Checked on October 21, 2026. The rules can change each season, so read the AAMC photo page and the AAMC documents page before you upload. To keep a margin, the checker counts 150 KB as 150,000 bytes.

    Why ERAS photos get rejected

    • The file is too big. A phone photo is often 2 to 5 MB. The fix saves a JPG under 150 KB.
    • The file type is wrong. iPhones save HEIC and some sites save WebP. The fix saves a JPG.
    • The shape is wrong. A wide or square photo is not 5:7. The fix crops it to 5:7 around your face.
    • Too many pixels. A phone photo can be 4,000 pixels tall. The fix makes it exactly 375 x 525.

What to wear and what background

Clothes are your choice: AAMC has no rule about them. Most applicants wear a suit or a blazer, and some wear a white coat. A plain, light background keeps the focus on your face.
